Thunderbird - junk filter

I have specified criteria in the "message filters" to determine that specific *from* sender's names be classified as junk and immediately moved to the junk folder. This works great and saves the time and effort to move them manually.

However, for some reason, Thunderbird often takes a message that does not meet the filter requirements and assumes it is junk, then moving it to the junk folder.

I have used the option *mark as NOT junk* on these messages but it continues to send these same messages to the junk folder anyway. Any idea how I can tell Thunderbird these senders are not to be treated as junk??

Rather than download the stuff and then delete it I use MailWasher which lets me either decide what is deleted or use a filter on it before I download. Either way when I run the Mailwasher "Was"h function all of the spam is deleted before I download my email via Thunderbird.

Not trying to DELETE, I'm trying to RESTORE a message Thunderbird thinks is spam.

I should have explained that I don't use the Thunderbird spam filtering at all. Mailwasher replaces it.

The spam never gets to my computer. The items Mailwasher thinks are spam are marked as such and when you review all of the items you just uncheck the ones you want to download. You can also tell Mailwasher they are friends and it won't mark them as spam in the future.

    thanks Clay,

I've solved my problem and had pretty good luck with TB's filter but I'll check into Mailwasher. Does it run within TB or do you have to log into it separately each time you want to see what junk mail you got. That's the problem I've had a couple of times, TB filter marks stuff junk when it's not.

It is a stand alone program. I have it set to open when Window opens. It will do an automatic header download when it opens if you wish but I prefer to tell it when to do that.
I have have TB set so that it does not do an automatic download.

Mark the message as "Not junk" and move it to the inbox of your choice. It should stay where you put it as a regular email.

Thunderbird lately has bee a pain with its spam decisions, marking legit things junk because it sees sales offers in the body of the email. Also the filters on Tbird used to be easier to use and more reliable.

I'm not sure how many addresses you're talking about, but have you tried whitelisting them? http://womeninbusiness.about.com/od/email-questions/f/How-Do-I-Whitelist-An-Email-Sender-Or-A-Domain-In-Mozilla-Thunderbird.htm

Thanks, I've never come across the term whitelisting email addresses. I'm just dealing with one email address and I think I got it fixed now.

The instructions in the link did not get it to work. However I got to thinking about my message filter in Thunderbird and realized I could send a filtered message anywhere I want. So I redirected it back to my Inbox and it appears to work fine now.

I found other links suggesting doing it the way your link said, and I'm still curious why that won't work. I'll check it out further.
  • Mailwasher Pro (from FireTrust) is a decent program. I used to use it all the time, and it did a great job at filtering/zapping spam. These days, I tend to browse E-mail on a portable device, and only log onto the machine at home to move all the incoming mail from the inbox into an archive folder, so I've stopped using it. Definitely a must have tool.
