We have both...though they are also both older units, so I can't speculate on the new ones.
I have the TomTom, and have had it for about 10 years or so, and I must admit that I've been slow on the updates, so there are times, when I'm driving over a new bridge or something, where it's got me going over water:), but generally, it gets me where I'm going. And, it's been good about the Walmarts, and other places of interest (POI) points on the system.
DW has the Garmin (about 5 years old), though she doesn't use it much, and we will use it on some trips we take in our van, but generally, since I'm unfamiliar with it, it doesn't get used much. It does have a larger screen than the TomTom, and seems to be a bit more accurate, but that could also be due to a 5-year advance in technology.
You probably won't go wrong with either of them, so I'd just check for price, as well as any special features you may want, such as hands free phone, or height restrictions (I think these are available on some models?).
Good luck
