I wonder if some of the file extensions on your new laptop are mapped to 2013. I haven't played with Win 8 so not sure if it's still there, but if you right-click on the "red icon" files and do an "Open With..." and use your Word 2004 can you read the file?
Just wondering if the pattern might be something like DOC files are ok but DOCX point to 2013 or something similar. Something is telling Windows to look for Word 2013 and then it's not finding it as it's not installed. That's usually set in the File Extension mapping.
