Have you gotten your file problem resolved?
You have not responded to your post.
I'm still playing with it - it appears that my old word programs will run on this WDW8 ... and when I transfer the files, I went from my older laptop to an external HD back-up, then to my new laptop. (The Ext HD is my back-up drive for all files).
I believe this is what happened:
I transferred a couple 'test files' to my new computer, and tried to open them. The new laptop "looks and finds" only the 'buy me' version of Word, so converts to it. But I don't have it activated and was not going to buy it if my old one works. SO, the conversion happened and I didn't know why - now, maybe I do.
So, I loaded the MSWord 2007 ... and it works. SO, now, when I transfer files, the files stay in the old Word version.
I believe that's what happens. Not positive yet, and I'm still bouncing around and learning things in WDW8 ... but it looks like I can delete the ones that 'upgrade' and re-transfer without a problem. We'll see and will let you all know.
I'm still figuring out all the 'stuff' in WDW8, but it looks like it doesn't matter which one I keep because once you figure it out (the learning curve) then it makes little difference.
Two things bum me out when a company (MS) changes my OS - one, I have to learn new stuff again and I'm pretty tech stupid so it take me a lot of time, and even then, am not sure I'm doing things the best and easiest way... but if it works, OK I use it. Second thing, not all programs work properly without some adjustment, and I get a little upset when I've bought one program already, it doesn't always work properly and I either have to buy it again (mini-extortion) or figure out if MS upgrades for free or gives a patch - and it's tough for me to figure it out because my tech knowledge is pretty minimal in the real work of "tech geeks" ... so I come here and get me fixed.
People here are very giving of time and expertise - and I always try to return the favor when I can on subjects I know about.
And the problem now always: Call a local tech guy for a simple Q, and it's never - one second answer - easy, "Do X" - and gain a customer when the time comes for real tech stuff. Instead, even for the simplest answer, its always "bring it in for a $79.95 consult". And often the answer is worth $4.00 or less of real time.
SO, yes, it seems to be working, although this new Toshiba is slower opening programs than the two year old Dell it replaced, once the program is open, Toshiba's faster than the Dell. I think that time factor opening may be due to 'converting time' from an old program version to a new one in this OS each time I open it - but, what do I know, not much. :) :)
