Transferring Docs/Files from one Computer to Another?

Our desktop is in the shop for a few days. The wife wants to get started on a photo project doing scanning with the laptop. The laptop currently is lashed up with the scanner.

My Question is. What is the method of transferring those files to the desktop when it comes back from the shop.

If this has been answered before I would appreciate a stear to that posting.

  • If it is anything you might want to save, I would buy a large (~1tb up) usb drive and establish a backup routine.

Good idea for small stuff. Far too slow for the volume they need to move.
  • I have 32GB thumb drive and transfer folders containing 1000+ pictures (many GB's) in less than a minute. Most pictures done recently are >3 MB along with HD movies (20 to 65 MB each). Thumb drives are on USB2 (not USB3).

Having a newer high-end computer makes the difference. I have a Asus I7, 8-core, computer from fall of 2011.
  • Thumb drive, perhaps, but if you have many large files/photos, they are very slow in my experience. I have always used either an external hard drive or file sharing over ethernet. The latter is especially convenient if you want to just set it up and let it run overnight or while you go get a cold one, or a cuppa, or even dinner.
