surge protector would help if there were spikes in voltage, but it wouldn't give much protection against a steady low or high voltage, which could be damaging. Also I agree with unplugging it during a storm. Can't hurt.
I unplug everything (shore cord) in a storm.
We unplug from power source AND phone line during storms or if we're out of town for extended periods of time.
