Two important notes... one is that Microsoft support will end for XP in March of 2014, meaning no new updates or security patches. Second is that 8 year old hardware is probably due to be replaced anyway and as some folks have already stated, you may also have issues running Windows 7 on it and many apps won't run due to the combination of Windows 7 and older hardware.
I would recommend getting a new PC with Windows 7 installed. Windows 8 is really for tablet users and is Windows 7 with a fancy interface. Windows 7 is widely available and will be supported for many more years as it is the current corporate standard for business PCs.
