Several people have already recommended buying new; I'll second that and point out that just the Windows license alone will be a significant portion of the cost of a new machine. When my wife's laptop died unexpectedly I bought her a new, but 9 months old (that's how old the processor was), Dell on a close-out from Amazon. It has an i7 processor, 4 GB of memory and a 64-bit Windows 7. Total cost was ~$470. I just checked and Amazon wants $180 just to buy Windows 7 Home.
