As another alternative, I'd consider waiting until October when Windows 8.1 is out, which helps with the UI issues. I'd also purchase new hardware, just because new hardware and a new OS will be a lot more secure than an OS made twelve years ago.
Security is an important issue, so might as well start out with a decently secure OS with hardware that will detect tampering on boot. As an added bonus, if one gets the pro version of Windows 8.1, they can enable BitLocker and encrypt the boot drive (thus protecting data if the machine gets stolen.)
