Sorry to read XP support going away next year...
I use the DELL M90 laptop sitting in a DELL DOCKING station that is connected to dual 24-inch Dell monitors, ext keyboard, speakers, externals hookups etc that is in my RV trailer and in the house. I also have several external high capacity USB hard drives for my photos, and other items like that.
This is the way to go for me... I just grab my DELL M90 laptop, plop it into the docking station and I have my same exact setup in the RV trailer as I do my house...
I got my certified DELL M90 LAPTOP from ebay several years back from a refurbished lease equipment company. It still had one year DELL warranty on it when I got it... Only cost $450 - came with operating system and many other MS program like MS OFFice etc... It runs on XP PRO... I do alot of autocad type drawings - I also have a HP Deskjet type printer with my RV setup as well.
I will probably go back and get another off-lease M6000 series DELL workstation laptop series since the M90s are no longer around. I see the replacement M6000 workstation series are in the $600-$900 range cost off ebay. Probably will get a M6600 or M6700 unit. I don't think I will go for Windows 8. Hearing too many bad things about windows 8...
I have had ZERO PROBLEMs with my XP PRO system virus wise. I download all of the updates, run two or three FREE Virus programs at least once a week. One does a scan when I boot up everytime...
I don't do the WIFI at large where I think you can get nailed pretty easy. I am behind a good firewall at home and use VERIZON MIFI when on the road.
My whole computer operation is the same whether I am at home or on the road... Just a bit slower when on the road.
We pay bills, check our emails, keep in touch with kids, and do some web search when on the road... I do alot of work OFF-LINE and interface my ham radio and emergency radio comms operations as well.
You really should look into the docking station idea for the RV. I haven't opened the lid to my LAPTOP for probably over a year now haha... Everything in my docking station is secured to the table top... VELCRO works wonders... The other beauty thing is when we leave the trailer for a few hours it is so easy to grab the laptop and keep in the truck while we are away.
