If you want to be absolutely sure of compatibility, get a Win 7 in one of the two upper configurations (not the basic install version - not sure what they called them). This will give you XP mode on a virtual machine running along with Win 7 and a full install of Win XP SP3. You will be able to then run anything that Win XP would run - and go back and forth between the two OS while you are working.
We did not have any problems with drivers or software when we moved to Win 7 and can run software that MS wants you to believe is not compatible with Win 7.
My Dell is a 32 bit machine and the XP is the Professional version and does have SP3. I know there are risk that some programs may have to be updated with newer versions. I was hoping that I might hear from people on this forum that had some program failures and had to get a newer version of some programs. My thought on this problem is if a program is going to fail on Windows 7, it will probably fail on Windows 8 as well. So, no matter how I get to 7 or 8, buy new or update this Dell, the failing program is going to fail and I will have to replace it anyhow.
