Our family has just purchased 3 new laptops with Win 8. It appears to be very stable. On mine I run Start8 as a front end so it functions just like a Win7 machine. The kids are using straight Win8 so far.
Migration from XP to 7 is painful *been there) It seems to make sense to move to the current (and stable) OS.
Several vendors are selling new machines with Win7 but they charge a premium for that. Seems like a poor deal to me.
With an 8 year old machine risk of failure is getting higher. I trust you do have regular backups.
