Windows 7 is almost bullet proof and I would guess that 8 is the same as in that you can do a system image backup and recovery disk. This method allows you to recover your OS and setup, as backed up, should you lose say your hard drive. Buy a new hard drive the same size and boot with the recovery disk and follow directions to expose your system image and your are back! Far superior to XP which I thought I could not do without. I do an image backup to DVDs and to another hard drive to cover a backup failure. I have built eight desktops and upgraded at least 3 laptops with W7. No one has brought me their broken W8 yet, I was a beta user of W8 and did not upgrade ... yet, and I was the same way with W7. The world of android and their apps along with Apple have moved the market and Windows based laptops are really inexpensive. $300 will get a nice W8 or W7 laptop @ Newegg.com.
