I went from XP to Win 7 on my desktop machine and consider it a downgrade. "Improvements" to Windows Explorer make it less useful. If you use Outlook Express for email you be spending a lot of time converting to something else. I have multiple applications that needed new versions ($$$) to run on Win 7. Running apps in the XP box generally works, just makes everything overall more difficult. Win 7 is somewhat more stable, I have to reboot maybe once a week instead of every few days. If I had it do do over I wouldn't do it, and the XP laptop is going to stay an XP laptop. IMO, the best upgrade is to replace the hard disk with an SSD.
