If you only want the Apple TV for Netflix and are not invested in other Apple products, you can do better than an Apple TV. The current Apple TV design has not been updated since 2010 and is getting long in the tooth.
For example, an Amazon Fire TV stick is less than half the price of an Apple and has a much faster interface. It will run Netflix and just about any other app available on Apple TV.
I generally rip the DVDs I own rather than watch on a DVD player. I keep a few on my Samsung Note 4 smartphone. Last week at a campsite we had neither wifi nor cellular signal. But I was able to mirror my Note 4's display to my TV via Amazon fire tv firestick and watch a movie since my DW wasn't feeling well and wanted to stay inside.
For just Netflix I would recommend something other than an Apple TV. Due note I have 2 Apple TVs at home, 3 macs, and an iPad.
