OP here with an update. I went to the Best Buy/Verizon counter with 'the letter', work name tag, and current pay stub. They told me to go to the big store at the mall, (Yay, just where I wanted to go). At the big Verizon, I told them I wanted to verify my employment to continue my discount. They looked at my paperwork and called someone. The person on the phone asked a zillion more questions and then gave me a long tracking number and a fax number. Told me to fax the pay stub. The helpful Verizon store person told me there was a Kinko's across the street that I could fax my pay stub to the 'employment verification center'.
I came home and faxed it, (good stuff blacked out). I'm waiting for some kind of confirmation. Moral of the story- try to take care of it from home.
I honestly believe if they just discounted all their customers 20%, it wouldn't put them out of business.
