Verifying tow number

Picked up the grand cherokee.
GVWR 6800 lbs
Curb weight 5154 lbs
GCWR 12600 lbs
Toung wt. 720 lbs
GAWR 3700 LBS
---------------------
Math
Curb weight 5154
Cargo/ppl.. 900
------
GVW. 6054.

Gcwr 12600
Apx gvr 6054
-------
6546 lbs

--------------------
Given this. A traler with a GVWR of 5200lbs should be comfortably managed by the suv?
  • The trailer we are looking at is the sonic 220vbh
    It's gvwr is 5200 lbs
    Dry toung wt is 390
Dry shipped wt (no propane, or battery yes to takns) 4251 lbs
  • On a lighter note (pun intended) hubs and I now have incentive to drop the extra 15 lbs we are both sporting lol
  • You're limit will likely not be GCWR, but that 720 receiver limit or payload.

You need to verify the as equipped payload. Open the driver's door and locate this sticker on the door or jam. Note what is listed where mine says 2051:

Will you have 900 pounds of people and cargo inside the Jeep or is that your estimate for things you can pack in the RV too?

720 pound loaded TW means about 5500 pounds loaded, or 4500-5500 pounds dry.
  • With your weights stated, you will have about 750 lbs of payload remaining but I would doubt that as the Jeep GC will not have 1650 of beginning payload before cargo and passengers are loaded. As was mentioned, look for the loading sticker on the driver's side door jamb.

BTW, brochure weights, especially that listed tongue weight, will not be accurate. You can count on the tongue weight being a couple of hundred pounds higher than 390 lbs.
  • With such a limited CCC and a family of 4 plus a dog using this trailer my bet is your biggest problem will be preventing this trailer's GVW with it loaded & ready to camp from exceeding it's GVWR of just 5200 lbs. Assuming GVW=GVWR that means it's gross tongue weight at even just 13% will be ~ 675 lbs so no doubt you'll be at the very limits of your tow vehicle with little payload capacity to spare. This isn't a combination I would enjoy but if you're really careful with what you load in the trailer I suppose it's doable ... but certainly not "comfortable". It's all a little late now though as you've apparently purchased this trailer. ;)
