Question - If the Jet Pack works on the cell system, why would waiting until arriving home prevent data usage? At home, if the Jet Pack is working from cellular, it's not going to access your WiFi to save data is it? We purchased a Jet Pack a while back, but I've never thought about this.
As for the updates when you want to go to sleep, turn it off, it will update the next time you use it.
