Verizon Jet Pack Data Usage

I have a Verizon Jet Pack we use for our laptop but in recent months, the data usage has gone nuts. We also have three iPhones on the account but we have been forced monthly increase data plans to the point we are now on a 18gb plan. The problem is not the phones but the laptop. It has gotten to the point, we can no longer use the laptop because it uses about 1gb per half hour and this is only using web surfing and emails. No videos. Any suggestions? Thanks
  • It's the auto updates that are killing you.
Everytime I go online with my desktop something is updating no mater how how diligent I am in turning all that stuff off, something always sneaks out.
I wish Windows had a universal switch that could turn off all auto updates for when you are away from home on some costly plan.
  • This is a "known" problem with Verizon and it has nothing to do with your computer, OS, or websites you visit. It is the way Verizon measures your use on their system. We have the same Jet Pack, but on the Millenicom 20G plan and with 2 computers, a wife that spends hours gaming on Pogo and I surf many forums. Our average usage is only 10-11 gigs monthly and that is with Millenicom doing the metering, not Verizon. If your contract is expired, go to Millenicom and put the Verizon metering problem behind you.

We get by for the whole month with around 2GB of data used for just checking emails, paying bills online, keeping in touch with the kids, and doing just a little of search the web. Sometime we want to watch some cable TV downstream which goes to town on using the data so it has to be something real important to watch...

Most of the time we get by just fine using the Natlional Broadcast digital HDTV from the local towns. We get 6-36 digital stations just about everywhere we go here on the east side of the US from the local towns. This is all full blown high def wide screen TV signals... Better than the old SAT RCVR setup brought from home and the camp ground cable hookups.

We always like to have a bunch of movies with us to.

We still are using Windows XP plus - never upgraded as the newer systems came out. Hear all kinds of strange things about Win 8... You know it has to be using alot of data if it is updating all those opened windows on the screen...

My setup is updating only one tab at the moment hehe...
Wish I had 18GB to play with.... Mine MIFI is only using a 3GB dataplan and costs $27 a month- I will stay with it until they run me off I guess... Think I read 2026 somewhere... I have had my Verizon MIFI 2200 unit setup for over five years now and have never run over my 3GB monthly plan...

When we are not on the road then my Verizon MIFI unit is out internet backup when the home Internet cable goes out on us...

  • One of the things that makes a big data usage difference going from 3G to 4G is visiting web pages. Under 3G things were so slow that many of the page images didn't load before you left the page. With 4G, Ads, background images, etc are loaded even if you don't see them. That can make a big difference if you visit graphically intensive pages...
  • Does your laptop run Windows 8? If so, the Live Tiles on the Statr screen constantly download data to keep current. There is an option on the wfi connection that can be set to tell Win 8 you are on a "metered connection" which should reduce the usage.
  • I run 2 laptops on the jet pack and max for me has been 4.5G usage.
Wife plays Facebook games every night for a few hours and I do the on line banking and bill pay stuff. Throw in e-mail for both of us and me checking RV.Net 3 or 4 times a day and the NASCAR sites I look at.

Sounds like you have multiple programs running in the background downloading stuff or syncing up some how. Randu
