Verizon Unlimited Data

I have a 3g MiFi device now on a unlimited data plan. I am having a problem with it. I would like to purchase a 4g JetPack. Does anyone know if I can do this and keep my unlimited plan. I would be purchasing this from a source other that Verizon. Thanks
  • I just called my old Independent Verizon Wireless dealer and asked about upgrading.(I have one dumb phone and a one smartphone)(both are ok for upgrade) Want to upgrade my old dumb phone to a new smartphone and then move it to my smartphone number with out losing my unlimited data on the orig smartphone number. They said no problem they can do that.
The key part I think is they are independent and not a company store.

I also just called my local Best Buy and was told they could do the same thing.

I still like my T-Mobile unlmited 3-g it appears (not sure on that) and 6.5 Gig of 4G.

I got warnings earlier this week "You have hit your 6.5 Gig limit, you will be throttled till 3/14/2014.

Actually, i'd gone to bed when they sent those (Evening of the 13th) so I did not get 'em till the 14th and the counter had already reset. Second time it has happened.

On phones, if you pay the full retail price instead of the subsidized price from Verizon, you can keep your old plan and just upgrade your phone. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe I've heard that you can replace an old phone with a different one purchased elsewhere(as long as it's a Verizon supported phone) and still keep your grandfathered plan. Actually, you can go online and do an MEID transfer yourself which transfers service from your old phone to your new one.

It would seem logical that you could do the same with a MiFi/Jetpack.

It's certainly worth a try. BTW, if you call and don't like the answer you get from Agent A, try calling again and talk to Agent B . . . you'll probably get a different answer!

The "catcher" might be upgrading from 3G to 4G.

    +1

I KNOW it works for phones. My Motorola Droid Razr Maxx developed the battery bulge common to that phone. I bought a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S3 off Ebay and did the service switch online. Kept my unlimited data and paid no activation fee.

One problem may be that 4G phones require a SIM while the 3G do not. Would assume it's the same for a Mifi, so that may cause a glitch.

Correct, with phones, you can acquire the phone anywhere and activate it on your Verizon acct and still keep your unlimited data. I bought my Galaxy S4 when a few months old off Craigslist, activated it, and kept my unlimited data.

    UPDATE:
I went to Best Buy as they told me they could make the change. Didn't happen... They could not access my Verizon account even after I called Verizon and changed my billing password. Next went to the mall kiosk who is a third party Verizon dealer. He sez Verizon has stopped upgrading allowing what I had wanted Best Buy to do to keep unlimited. And that if Bust Buy had tried my account might have showed ok at first but later would change. He used to do it but it doesn't work anymore. He used to be a manager at the Best Buy at that store and asked who I had talked to. I told him he just rolled his eyes.
Sure glad now I didn't let Best Buy make any changes and later find out I lost my unlimited.

He did have a solution... Upgrade my dumb phone to new smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S4 ($100 with $100 rebate) with new 2Gig contract on it.($30) Then AFTER 14 days I can go and exchange numbers on the phones. And then downgrade the old smartphone on the old dumb account to the old dumb phone and that will cancel the 2 G contract. You must wait over 14 days to do the switch. He said after 14 days they can't stop me from doing that.
So I said go for it... I didn't come home with a new phone as he only had one S4 phone left and found after he was almost done and ready to activate it found it was missing the battery. He had to call Verizon as he couldn't complete the activation of the phone with no battery in it and he couldn't deactivate since it wasn't done activating. Catch 22. Verizon got it back so I had my old dumb phone and will try all this at a later time. Was just worn out by then and went home.

How long have you had this plan? Do you find that you can use T Mobile in most places that you travel to? I would really like to drop Verizon and try T mobile just worried about not haveing enough coverage.
