Vista Upgrade to Win10?

I have an older desktop running Vista that we only rarely use (I have a laptop, wife has an Ipad). I want to keep it as a backup and for occasional tasks that are easier on the desktop. I don't think MS is offering the free Win10 upgrade for Vista. My question is, should I purchase and upgrade to Win7 and then upgrade to Win10 when available, or just leave things the way they are? I've had no problems with Vista to date.

  • Vista was a turd right out of the box so if you managed to get one that worked dont mess with it. I would just wait for a new computer that already runs WIN 10 casue it will probably cost the same as just buying a stand alone OS for fresh install. Those minimum requirements are a joke too. That machine would be a slug to run and you will want to smash it after 10 minutes.

In my opinion Vista was already broken ... ;) but as you already said, if the original poster has been happy with it, while spend any money to upgrade the OS .

  • If the old desktop is running well with Vista for what you use it for, I would leave well enough alone. You may run into hardware limitations. (Do not believe anything about how much minimal RAM you can get by with). You may have software you run on your vista that will need to be upgraded or replaced if you upgrade to 10.

At some point in six months to a year, if you see a machine running 10 and you have to have it, then bite the bullet and get a current version Surface Pro and dump both the laptop and Desktop, or keep one as a backup.

  • You might check to make sure that older desktop has the right hardware to run Win10. I think I read someplace that it might not run on "older" machines.

  • I would, though you may have to do a stand alone or clean install to Windows 10 when officially released. MS hasn't announced the standalone pricing for Window 10, but its a free upgrade from WIN 7/8.1 for one year. You can begin reserving a copy of WIN 10 upgrade beginning today. I believe scheduled to be release on July 29.
