visual monitoring via wifi

DW wants a camera in house in OR and one in AZ home so we can log on to laptops (we have FIOS in OR and AireBeam in AZ)

1. Is something like this possible?
2. How simple can we make it?
3. What are dependable camera's?
4. Only want wireless as we have WIFI routers in each place.
5. Am extremely limited in knowledge and installation.
6. Would be nice Holiday present for DW when she visits AZ in Jan.

Any feedback is most welcome!
  • Take a look at something like this: Foscam at Amazon. You can set these up easily in your home and connect them to your wireless router. Then, you can use an application on your smartphone to look at them any time you wish. You can also program them to send you an email if they detect motion. If you're worried about temperature in the house, just include a large thermometer in the room where the camera is! Works great.

You need to make an entry in your wifi router to allow access but the cameras come with clear instructions on doing that. I'm assuming you have a cable modem connection to your home...you'll need that.

    Possible yes, cheap, no.

Simple, yes if you are having the cameras installed and setup via a paid service. No, if you are wanting to DIY..

There are many security camera systems which have a built in DVR function that you could install. Many of these offer remote viewing of the cameras and DVR but will require considerable setup to do so.

Many of those wiresless IP cameras will require some outside "host" which you will pay a monthly fee in order to view them remotely. So you will need to shop around..

The security camera/DVR packages look like they may be the better route but if you are technically challenged it may be better to have a pro system installed (at a higher upfront cost).. Just be aware that many Pro systems will require a monthly monitoring fee..

I have thought about doing this as well... Sort of surprised the cameras are cheap enough even for this ole man...

Sounds like a great thing to do for the security of the home base when we leave for sometimes a few weeks at a time...

Haven't checked into how the system works but the home base already has internet connections as well as land-line telephone So I am guessing that part of it is not hard to come up with a remote operating video camera system.

  • Try dropcam.com

Live viewing via smart phone either IPhone or Android and Ipad is free.
  • Check out Swann.com Wireless cameras can be a real pain. Swann has systems for all levels. Very easy to monitor via the internet.

I highly recommend buying Foscam wireless webcams for ease of set up and price. I have been using Foscam webcams for years and they can't be beat for price and performance. I recommend buying the pan and tilt cameras so you can see a much larger area with just one camera. Their tech support will help you set it up remotely if you have a tough time doing it yourself. No sales tax and free shipping if you live outside of Texas. Good luck!
