I just remembered two products.. one you can often find at Dollar General, Wal*Mart and many other stores on the SEEN ON TV counter. Even Publisher's clearing house carreies it.. It is called (Among other things) Rescue tape. It is a streatchy silicon Rubber tape self sealing and works great.

At least one of the products is it. Again, very much the same kind of tape. Self fusing Silicon Rubber.. Folks who have tried it said when they took the connection apart.. years later.. it still was bright and shiny as the day they hooked it up.
