I don't think I would advise setting Media Player as the default for ALL media but tried to get M44 to set the default photo app to something else besides the Win 8 default awhile back. There are lots of alternative photo viewing apps so why insist on using the one in Win 8 that you don't like?
I set the default on my Win 8 computer to the Windows Photo Viewer which does a nice job of letting me cycle thru my photos. If I need/want to edit one of them I can invoke IrfanView from within the Photo Viewer program.
