We use a grandfathered VERIZON 3G MIFI plan for basic internet that works anywhere you are in range of a VERIZON CELL PHONE SERVICE tower. Verizon does not have the 3G plan for sale anymore but does have a 5GB dataplan for around $50 a month. These create a WIFI HOTSPOT for up to 5 WIFI enabled wireless devices to use around your RV setup.. Our range is around 50-80 feet from the MIFI unit. This can be extended by using a WILSON SLEEK CRADLE with external antenna to sit the MIFI unit in. This increases the WIFI generated foot-print big time.
These are just for checking into the internet, paying some bills, keeping tabs with the kids and some small surfing of the internet. We get by just fine using our 3GB dataplan monthly plan with Verizon. If you want to downstream movies or HDTV you will need to have at least a 20GB DATAPLAN. Just one movie will eat up around 1GB or more of data...
Check out the VERIZON JET PACK MIFI type plan that uses a larger GB dataplan. Price is $80 to $100 a month.
VERIZON TOWERs across the country seem to have the best overall coverage through-out the USA... The other carriers seem to only work well around the large towns and along the interstates.
We found trying to use whatever WIFI HOTSPOT signals that might be available here and there around the camp grounds was not a dependable system to count on. Whenever everyone at the camp grounds tries to get on at the same time usually kills the service. These places can't be all that secure as well... Probably not a good idea paying bills sitting in a McDonalds parking lot using their WIFI hot spot...
If you are just interested in basic secure emails and some internet etc the VERIZON MIFI package may be your answer.
