Actually, Google engineers are extremely easy to defeat...don't use their search engine, use one that doesn't track, such as DuckDuckGo.com.

I've used Mozilla Firefox with AdBlock Plus for years now. When I first switched to that from IE, I was amazed at how it reduced the tracking cookies on my computer. And ditto the recommendation for using DuckDuckGo for searches.

I use a web browser that offers a setting to have session cookies. This allows cookies to work normally while you have the browser open, but when you exit the browser all cookies are deleted.

Viruses and malware are a different issue than tracking- it is getting harder and harder to keep any hint of anonimity when on the web- started with traditional cookies, then flash cookies (which are not kept in the same place as traditional cookies, and not governed by browser settings), user agent tracking (fingerprinting), and now HTML5 canvas tracking (fingerprinting).

I use most of what mits22 does and I also use Ghostery and AdBlock Plus. They are available for FireFox and Chrome.

Number one method of avoiding computer viruses and spyware is to not fall for something stupid from scammers and hackers. I'd assume that if someone put out a virus in a mass email that simply read "Click here to install latest virus" there would be millions of people clicking on it.

At my work viruses originate from the same few users while most others have no issues year after year. Can't get a virus unless you click on something you shouldn't. Best defense starts with the user educating themselves on the do's and dont's.
