I've used Garmin Basecamp, a free program that can be downloaded from Garmin's web site. I lay out our routes, then upload them to our Garmin GPS which then navigates us.
As I understand it:
You get free and updated lifetime maps when you buy a new Garmin.
BUT, you have to keep updating the Garmin and if you fall behind on the updates (like if you fail to update for a year or so) then you loose the updating service.
Purchase for non-north america maps is required.
