I still use Streets and Trips 2010 for planning. I suspect that Microsoft stopped making new versions because buyers don't NEED a new version every year. But so far, I haven't run into any state that's eliminated an expressway. For more detail at my destinations, I supplement with paper maps at gas stations as I enter each state, and/or call the CG for detailed directions. I have a TRACFONE for that task, but I pull over before using it. Unlike many of today's teenagers, I'm incapable of giving the proper attention to driving and talking on the phone at the same time.

I used DeLorme Street Atlas for years and ignored BaseCamp even though I had it. I finally read the BaseCamp instructions and with lots of experimentation I can do anything I want in BaseCamp now and no longer use DeLorme Street Atlas. But you need to have a Garmin GPS with lifetime maps, that way the maps will be updated about 4 times a year, and it's all free (once you buy the GPS).

P.S. Don't try to use the BaseCamp "Trip Planner" it will just frustrate you.

On the Good Sam site check out their Trip Planner. I used it for our trip last month, did all the routing, etc with on my iPad or PC. I believe it gives you the option to print it out. I did the down load to the Rand McNally Good Sam gps I have. I was pleased with the results using it.

These sort of questions get asked of me a lot. It may be because I used to sport a name tag that said "Navigator".

The simple and short answer is that there is only one complete and effective package available these days. That is Street Atlas. It can accommodate users between "knows what a mouse is" to "works largely by Lat/long and plans multi-thousand mile excursions". Buy it with the GPS puck and get a little inverter (if you don't have AC power underway) so you can let it run full time. You can pass the plan to a stand alone, or just load the critical points for the day's travel.

If you search up the Discovery Owners site and collect the overlays for a bunch of good stuff.

Street Atlas still has some issues and the charts tend to be inaccurate and not up to date, so the brain must still be left engaged while traveling. It will tell pretty good routes most of the time and where to look to buy fuel and make and End Of Day plan.

I tried switching to BaseCamp on my PC but it is really clunky. I went back to using Streets & Trips which has 99.5 % of roads, parks, and POI that I need.

Base Camp from Gamin is free and runs on Windows or Mac using the maps from your Garmin GPS. You can plan a trip and upload it to your Garmin.

The downside here is you need to have a Garmin GPS or you need to buy the maps from Garmin that you can load for Base Camp. The other nice thing is you can find custom and user provided maps that can be loaded and used as well. Things like off-road trails, hiking maps, topo maps, etc. Not all that usable for an RV, but great for the Jeep or for hiking.

It does seem a bit "clunky" to me though, at least on a Mac. Haven't tried it on a PC. It works though and is compatible with my portable Garmin.

Delorme Street Atlas here also for 14+ years. Great program. Develop the trip plan on my laptop and use the "transfer file" function via a jump drive to move it to my Acer NetBook and it's smaller screen for when under way with the GPS transponder via a USB port.

DeLorme Street Atlas is what we've been using for 20 years or so. You don't need internet and you can customize the trip many ways and go the way YOU want to go. We traveled secondary roads the majority of time and it worked great for us. When you have the route perfected you can transfer it to a Garmin or you can use the DeLorme GPS and follow it on your laptop.

I used CoPilot for years, but they got so involved with the smartphones and small devices, they didn't keep up with the 32 and then 64 bit changes and their support went from great to non-existent. Delorme works fine but the program architecture is pre-Windows, so it looks like you're working on a Commodore 64. Program works OK, but they are very slow updating the maps. Lots of new roads out there you'll not have to work with as they don't bother to update. Valdez, AK has shown to be miles out in Prince William Sound for years in some views. The last version of Streets and Trips is great but since Microsoft stopped making and supporting it, it's hard to find and I expect Microsoft to one day block it's use in their new operating systems. Not really a lot of choices. We're using Delorme but I'd jump on any other new program that worked as well (or better) with a Windows architecture. Especially if they kept the maps current.
