I've had both Dish Network and Direct TV. Although I had DISH Network with the portable (Tailgater) model, I got tired of having to setup the dish antenna to make sure it is aimed at right orientation (facing south in Southern CA).
The rest is taken care of by its automatic search feature. It will lock-in to one of the three satellites that DISH have circling the Earth at asynchronous orbit which is fine--but you still have the problem of weak or no signal during cloudy days, tall buildings or trees in front of the dish etc.
My solution: Get rid of the dish and signed up for a subscription from Amazon. Check it out. No contract, no commitment, pay as you go.
With Amazon Fire TV, no more setup everytime you pull into a campground and no more coax cables to drag around. Fix roof antenna wouldn't have to deal with this however. This will also save you the hassle of climbing up the roof (with the tailgater) and hope you don't slip off the ladder on your way down.
When you are at this stage of life where the goal (travelling in your RV) is to enjoy the golden retirement years with out the hassle, check out Amazon Fire TV, it might save you broken bones and frustration of not getting a signal on your satellite dish.
When you are sitting down in your RV living room, sipping your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon, all you need to worry about is which direction the Dow Jones averages is headed for the day and Facebook images
of your grand kids.
