I've been using Windows 8.1 since it came out - at first I was bewildered with it, coming from Windows Vista, but I've learned to like it. I find it easier to understand than Windows 7, which is on my wife's computer.
As for a browser, I trust Firefox. Been using it for probably 10 years or so. I tried Chrome and found that, although it is indeed faster, you gain that speed at the cost of data throughput. If you're on a limited internet connection, such as hotspot of mifi device, you'll use up data whenever Chrome is loaded, whether or not you're actually surfing. It constantly downloads current information for EVERY web site you frequent so that when you decide to actually open up that website it is already there for you. If your internet connection is unlimited then that doesn't really matter, but it will increase your data use by a substantial amount.
