Mine did the same thing. First go to your manufactures website and see if they have drivers for Windows 10 for your laptop. If they do then it is possible to force Windows 7 to download the Windows 10 update without waiting.
Microsoft is staggering updates to people so their servers aren't overloaded. Thats the biggest reason for the message that they'll let you know when its ready. In my case I did have to search out the video card driver manually as the Windows 10 update didn't do that.
I bought a 2nd cheap hard drive, mirrored my Windows 7 to it, then did the update to 10. That allows me to change back to 7 with ease if I decide to.
