I bought a new Dell laptop that came preloaded with windows 10. I hated the windows 10 interface so I downloaded a free program called Classic Shell that makes it look like windows 7 even it is still running windows 10. The problem is it runs slower than molasses and I have not loaded any programs except my antivirus program. RAM after the initial bootup is fine. But it shows the CPU running at 95%+ all the time. I can't find anything that should be making the CPU run like that. Suggestions or should I take it back and have Staples tech look at it?

It sounds like that Classic Shell program is the resource hog. Uninstall that program and see if the machine runs correctly. If it does, then the problem is the program, not the machine.

Call Dell support. I have had a couple issues with my new inspiron to the point i was gonna throw it in the lake here. Thats how frustrated I got. They got onto my system and fixed it in about 20 minutes.

Call up the task manager and tell us what program is using all the resources (CPU, network, ram, disk). CTL-ALT-DEL

I have Classic Shell on a Dell laptop and see no issue. Be sure to run a virus scan. You should be able to see the resource hog in task manager as stated above. With all the automatic program updates, and other "helpful" things going on in the background, you need to boot up a computer a couple of hours before it is your turn to use it.

Uninstall the classic shell.You can quickly make Win10 look a lot like 7.Right-click all the tile things on the desktop, and remove them. Now when you click on the windows icon, all your programs will be listed in alphabetical order. You can just scroll down and find them, or what I do is pin them to the taskbar, the row at the bottom of the screen. to do that, find the program and right-click. Sometimes there will be a "more" menu item. If necessary, click on that and then "pin to taskbar." If you can't find anything you frequently use, click in the search area at the bottom of the screen and type whatever it is, for instance, control panel. Then when you find it, pin to the taskbar.

To the OP: many new laptops come with a lot of bloatware preinstalled. Many of these are programs you'll never want or use. Have you uninstalled any of these? Tat may help.

I hardly ever boot win10. The only time is when a software update calls for it.

I agree, laptop is in the process of installing Windows 10 updates. After Win 10 updates completely and reboots laptop will be aok speed wise.

Must be a Mac fan based on name. I'm not a Microsoft fan but prefer Windows to Apple's closed world. However, Windows 10 64-bit is the best Windows version yet and is a solid OS contrary to above fake news.

Interesting statement. I set up my wife's win 10 64 bit to look like her former win 7 64 bit machine. I find it to be much more stable and requiring fewer reboots. My win 7 work machine needs to be rebooted every 3-4 weeks but she rarely boots here win 10.

All 4 of our PCs run Windows 10 64 bit and it works really well - better than 32 bit on our older machines.

Oh, I forgot, 3 of our 4 machines are Dell.

No one has mentioned the most likely issue, i.e. a version of Windows 10 that was put on the laptop at manufacture surely has some/many Windows 10 updates to install that will make the device seem creepy/crawly. It could be as some others have suggested but Win 10 updates in the queue are certain.

I use StartIsBack and have tried Classic Shell and neither slows down Win 10. I have StartIsBack on 4 Win 10 PCs with no problem and a more usable (in my opinion) interface. And all of these PCs have had multiple Windows updates in the last couple of months.

Not trying to spend other people's money, but the addition of a Chromebook is my recommendation also. Cheap and fast, just like the waitress down at the burger joint.
