Microsoft is doing its users and everyone else a favor. Get used to it, this is the way things are going to be will ALL commercial operating systems from here out. Apple and Android do the exact same thing.
Apple doesn't push iOS updates automatically, but they can make them available very quickly to every iOS device. Not sure about OS X, but I don't think most security fixes are auto-pushed. And Android doesn't push anything automatically because they so thoroughly ceded control of their ecosystem to the manufacturers and carriers. In some cases they can automatically update issues, but only if it's in the few parts of Android that they didn't yield control over.
