Windows 10 Security

I think I read somewhere that Windows 10 doesn't require a 3rd party security suite be installed. I'm currently running 8.1 with the Norton security suite. Is Win 10 that secure that it doesn't require a 3rd party security program? I've tried searching for an answer but haven't come up with anything.
  • Thanks for your insight. Norton has worked well for me thus far and I'll probably retain it for W10. My upgrade is ready but I'm waiting for a while to see if most of any bugs get worked out. In the meantime, W8.1 is just fine.
  • Ask any security expert if they would be comfortable with just an ant-malware program. They would not be.

Anti Malware software is not enough. You need to dynamically block known malware and phishing sites. That is, you need web filtering in addition to anti-malware software.

Use Open DNS for the DNS entries in your home router and/or Bluecoat K9.

Both are free for home use. Both maintain databases fed by business users and are very up to date. Both protect Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. I personally run both of these.
  • I have had real good results with Bitfinder free edition. this was recommended by more than one techie friend and they also use the system.
  • You need a 3rd party Anti Virus program even with Windows 10. I recommend you dump Norton and go to ESET NOD 32.

Also, for malware I use the free versions of these programs:

    CCleaner
    Malwarebytes
    Defraggler

    I run these weekly....
  • Both Windows 10 and MAC OS X comes with "basic" security package to protect against malware. Don't have any data on Windows 10 as of yet, but the built-in Defender in Windows 8.1 didn't fair very well in independent security testing, scoring among the lowest in detection compared to popular AV. I'd suggest not to rely on it, on go with a highly rated third party AV package. Just make sure its specifically compatible with WIN 10.
