Windows 7 System Restore Error

I started using a new Win7 laptop several months ago. Used System Restore successfully a couple of times. However, about a month ago I tried to use it and after bootup got "System Restore did not complete successfully. Could not access a file". Unfortunately, the file name wasn't given.

Have installed a few programs since then but still get the same error when trying to backout the latest installed program. Seems unlikely the same file can't be accessed.

The MS prescribed "fix" for this is either to go back to an earlier clone of the drive or reinstall Windows and ALL of my programs. The latter is a no-go. I could do the former from a backup drive, but hate to have to transfer all data that was added/changed since the old clone. I do have a "file-sync" program that might do this automatically.

I hate to give up System Restore for the rest of the time I use this laptop. It comes in handy at times. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ralph

  • Thanks for the tips. In looking for solutions, I already noticed an AV could be the problem. The last time I tried, I did disable Bit Defender (free ver) and System Restore still failed. I also have Malwarebytes (free ver) installed, but I think that only scans when I request it to. Will do some more investigation and hope I find a solution.
  • As mentioned, disable Antivirus program first, then do System Restore.
  • Sounds like you missed the error when your last backup was working. Unfortunately there is no recovery program as the backup was not successfully completed, hence there is nothing to recover....you might try system restore to an earlier time. Too late now but always ensure the backup successfully completes. It take a bit of time to backup so it's not always easy to watch it while it completes..but well you know the consequences.....sorry....Dennis
