I agree it's a problem that when Microsoft brings in a new OS, old programs sometimes will not work. So far mine do, including Office 2003, which Microsoft claimed was incompatible with 8.
I don't care at all about the "metro" screen -- never see it, as my 8.1 laptop boots right to the desktop and looks just like 7. And system restore is in the same place it was in 7 (different from XP).
I didn't like the idea of changing systems any more than the next guy, but it's foolish to me to go out of my way to buy an obsolete system on a new computer. It didn't take me that long to make the switch. And I like the touch screen when I'm reading my daily paper online -- much easier to scroll.
