me too. oh there was a bit of a learning curve going to win 8/8.1 but not enough to get ones panties in a knot.

They sure could have done this OS design and rollout a lot better. A good OS becomes second nature and transparent to the apps and programs you want to run. It seems to me that W7 did this well following on years of familiarity with XP and its forebearers - W8 did not in so many ways. It is a good OS, but an abruptly poor transition from W7.

With all the competition from other computing devices, and a younger crowd that did not need to pass thru the MS PC era as we did, W8 has gotta be hurting MS.


Edit: by 'good', I mean stable, does cleanup and defrag automatically, runs fast on lighter hardware - things like that. Its better under the hood.

I appreciate the suggestions, etc. but, as stated, the purpose of my post was to express my disgust with Windows 8/8.1. IMHO, it sucks.

There is a system image restore in Win 8 but it is hard to find.
This is not the same as the standard restore function but one that restores a system image (clone with all settings and programs backed up).

The restore image function is at Settings/change PC settings/general/advanced start up.
To make a system image system image go to Control Panel/Windows 7 File recovery/make system Image.

I don't have Win 8.1 so don't know if the function available in it or not. I was told that it is not however.

I did not 'upgrade' to Win.8 but made the unhappy purchase of a new laptop with Win. 8 installed.

I,m not sure visacalc will run on Win 8 or 8.1 :W

Move the curser to the upper right corner, select the magnifying symbol and type in restore in the search box. There will be at least 4 different options to chose from.

It's in my Win 8 and now Win 8.1 laptop.

Works the same as the Win 7, and earlier, process.

Now, I cannot 'restore' previous to the upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1

8 and it's "fix" 8.1 brings nothing to the party other than the "metro" screen. Not to mention it further "hides" or eliminates many "optional" features, programs and tweaks from the end user further dumbing down the OS. This causes folks who like to ultimately customize their PC to their own tastes to turn to add on third part programs (for a price) to bring back some of the hidden features.

W8 is nothing more than a glorified tablet OS which was supposed to bring the tablet, laptop and desktop worlds "together" in one cohesive OS. It FAILED at this, some software just doesn't function with Win8(.1) so if you have software you like and the vendor no longer is developing that software you are plain out of luck..

It is one of the those "hate it or love it" OSs like "ME, and "Vista".

If you "love it" then keep it and use it, but for the folks who simply hate it, then I would recommend getting a copy of Win7 PROFESSIONAL OEM VERSION, while it is still available.

The Retail box versions are no longer shipping but the OEM version is still available. Just be careful of the vendors there ARE many counterfeit versions being sold and they are often sold for $50 or $100 (Craigslist, EBay and even some have been spotted on Amazon), the real deal OEM should be around $135.

Before buying Win 7 go to your PC manufacturers website and verify and download ALL Win 7 drivers for your PC. Burn them to a CD or copy to an external HD or flash drive.

My issues involve incompatibility of programs. Some can be fixed and some cannot. And I hate the fact that there is no 'System Restore' in Win. 8.
