There is reality, and there is virtual reality (VR). To the extent that we understand the nature of the universe, which has come a long way since the Indo-Aryans started mythologizing around campfires some 3500 years back, we understand what virtual reality holds in store. So before anyone says they know where our electromagnetic technology is going, we should be humbly reminded that we still appear clueless as to the nature of gravity. (Dark energy/matter mumbo jumbo makes it clear that Einstein was wrong, and Tesla and Whitehead are closer with their notions of aether and wave-field, respectively.)
The point about The Many and The One, and Apple and Microsoft, which are two distinct corporate entities engaged in the enterprise of fabricating VR, was that Apple historically focused on bringing the many things of human enterprise into the feel-good grasp of the individual; whereas, MS, like IBM, sought to bring the many individuals into conformity of practice. So Apple's stuff appeals to the artful non-conformists at heart, while Microsoft's appeal has been to traditionalists focused on efficiency within group projects.
So if you had to associate one company with just one type of mobile device, Apple consumers dig tablets and MS folks like to produce w/ PCs. But Appies need to type documents, and Winnies consume app content, and then ipad is little different from a Surface RT.
