Winegard GM 1518 vs GM 5000 Carry Out Portables

Does anyone know the difference between the GM 1518 Carry Out for $699 vs the GM 5000 Carry Out Anser Hybrid for $449 other than the dollar amount?

The Anser requires manually setting the elevation at each location. On the plus side, it has a larger dish than the 1518, so it should be a bit less subject to "rain outs".
  • No dome style antenna can receive the DirecTV HD programming but it will work with most DirecTV HD receivers (viewing SD channels only).
The Carryout (1518) and the Anser (5000) can both receive the Dish HD programming.

Ok so I can just pull an HD receiver out of my house & use it. Thanks.
  • NOOOOOOOO you cannot use any ole HD Receiver. It must be -24 or below....cannot use 25 or 35. I just talked to Winegard and DirecTV and they verified that.
  • You can't use an H25 receiver or higher as the units come out of the box but you can use either antenna with an H25 or higher if you add the DirecTV SWM kit to the antenna. Not a big deal but it's about $100 worth of added parts.
Most DirecTV customers do not currently have this equipment but as time goes by it will become more and more common.
  • You can purchase the Winegard 5000 for $356.98 from Dyer's rv. Shipping is free. I don't know about tax.

Amazon and Camping World had them for $349 before Christmas.
