Winegard Traveler conversion, DirectTV to Dish

We recently acquired a used fifth wheel that came with a 5-year-old Winegard Traveler automatic satellite dish on the roof. It is the model for DirectTV (SK-3003) but we would like to have Dish TV instead (model SK-1000 is for Dish). Does anyone know the conversion process and cost? Are the components only available through Winegard?
Regards,
Peter

In this case you are correct it doesn't matter since the SK3003 is only for SD, but for HD the dish and LNB do care. For HD Direct uses two satellites that broadcast on the Ka band which is a higher frequency than the Ku band used by Direct for SD. The Dish satellites broadcast on the Ku band.

Ku band 12 to 18 GHz
Ka band 26.5 to 40 GHz
  • Thanks for this information. I'll call that Winegard number. The pricing sounds right.

  • Yes, you can easily and inexpensively change the SK-3003 (DirecTV SDTV only) to Dish. You need a new dish, arm and LNB and you will need to do a bit of reprogramming of the controller inside the coach.
I believe the replacement Dish/arm/LNB combo costs $200-$300 and you should be able to do the conversion yourself if you have some tools and don't mind going up on the roof. The 2 parts packages you will need are:

    RPSK – 11 Dish reflector

    RPSK – 21 Misc. hardware

You can call Winegard customer service to order get the exact pricing.

  • There is three different travelers which are based on Satelite provider.
You may need to change out the arm and dish.
    Call Winegard

  • although you may/will get some helpful advice here, I would also contact Winegard and get their professional opinion. keeping in mind that they probably would like to sell you a new unit. :)
