The best mics will use a mini male phone connector and the D7100 has a mic port for just this purpose. I would start by trying out the stereo mic in the camera.
For shooting videos we get the best results by using an inexpensive wireless lavalier mic and a receiver with the receiver jacked into the camera. The one we use is a Audio Technica Pro 88W /R that cost $125 at B&H. Excellent sound and the lavalier is a cardioid type so it is semi-directional and picks up less ambient noise. It is VHF and has a range of more than 100'.
This kind of setup works the best as it puts the mic right where you want it and that is seldom at the camera.
