We have learned the hard way, when selecting a router, you can't cheap-out. If you use more than 1 device at a time, you want something a bit more beefy. If you do streaming video (NetFlix, Hulu, or gaming), you'll want a router that will handle multiple devices at a time. And yes, they do cost more than routers that are made to handle only a single device.
What will result if you use an "under powered" router? You can expect computer freezes, time-outs on the internet, and loss of connection. It's very, very frustrating!
We changed routers (several times now), because of these issues. We finally got a good beefy router. Paid about $200 for it, seemed rather expensive at the time, but after going the cheap route 3 or 4 times, those cheap ones combined cost more than a single one designed to handle the load. We should have started "beefy" to begin with, we would have saved ourselves a lot of money over time. Our current Router, we got it from Best Buy, and we've not had a single issue with it since! We often have 4 to 6 devices running at a time, especially since we have 2 televisions in the house that are WIFI connected too! We use our cell phones off the home router, and our computers. It not uncommon for all our devices to be operational at once. And there are no time-outs now. It just took us time to figure it out!
Do yourself a favor and get the product that will work for your needs, and don't worry about the cost. You'll not regret it. But you will kick yourself if you spend money, it doesn't meet your expectations, and then you end up buying what you should have the first time! I'm talking from experience! Go to Best Buy and let them help you figure out what you need! They are there to do that for you!
