2013 Ford Explorer

2005 Ford Explorer 4.0 l engine 4x4. Rated 4800 lbs and comes with a class 2 hitch. Had a class IV hitch installed and bought a camper that wieghed 4200 lbs. With the kids and all equipment we were well over the weight limit. Also the truck has the aluminum alloy rims which 2 have sheared 4 out of 5 lugs and stripped the holes in the rims. I think that this was caused by being so close with the weight. Anywho I have upgraded to a Chevy 3500 Express van. I will never pull anything with the Explorer except a utility trailer again. Just saying anything you get should be under 3000 lbs so that will limit you to popups or super light trailers

We have a 2013 Explorer as well. You should be looking in a gvwr of 3500-4000. I honestly wouldn't go higher an that. That is going to limit you to things pop ups, maybe a hybrid or two or some real small travel trailers. I mean small like casitas or 15' TT in size. We bought a pop up to pull behind ours. I do have experience towing both a pop up with an older explorer we used to have and the. Our other listed trailer with an f250 we traded in for the new explorer.

40 sq. ft. is 5X8 ft; 7X 5'8", or similar figures. There are a few that would fit inthat category. I remember the good old days when you could tow with your car as it came off the showroom floor.

Sounds like you will be looking at Scamps, Tab's (by little guy), RPod's or maybe even the MPG's

I have a 2011 Explorer with the tow package and am towing a 2012 Jayco 228. The trailer fully loaded (but without water) is 4400 lbs and a 425 lbs tongue weight. There is myself, the wife and our three kids in the vehicle. My GCWR is almost maxed out (max 10,250 and I'm at 10,050). It goes nicely on the flats and some hilly areas but I would not feel comfortable towing through the Rockies mountains with it. Ryan.

We tow a popup with our 6cyl Exploder err Explorer, with no trouble. The frontal area is small and the weight is about 1500lbs, I can 'feal' the extra load on the truck that is for sure, and I have towed trailers for years.

If tow rating is 5000#, the tongue weight rating is likely still 500# as it was in 2010, however it was 716# WITH WDH and proper options then. If it still is, a TT with GVWR of 5000#, minus weights to be put in the explorer over the driver of course, should be fine.

Why the statement about other stuff in SUV? We have an Expedition, and with wife, me, and a 58# dog, plus almost 960# tongue weight, we are almost to our SUV rear GAWR.

FWIW my 2002 F350 diesel is rated for 60 sqft frontal area as well. Rest assured that our 5ver is over that. So are thousands of others.
