30 amp vs 50 amp campsite ???

Do most of you with TTs pick a site with 30 amps or pick one with the 50 amp if you have the 30-to-50 shore connector? Our rep told us the only time we would need a 50 amp site would be if we were running the microwave the same time the AC was on.

We are making reservations for our week-long trip in June and want to know if we should get a 30 amp site or the 50 amp site. The 30s have more lake front sites and the sites are not assigned w/the reservation so thinking we would have a better chance of getting a lake front site on the 30 amp side. Thanks!

Actually I think I was confused (I'm "Wife" and not the "CarpFisherman" so I can play dumb). Our TT is a 30 amp so we can never run 50 amp but we have a connector in case we can only find a 50 amp site and have to convert it down to 30 amp right? So in looking back not sure why the rep said we may need 50 amp to run AC and microwave at same time because we cannot put 50 amps in a 30 amp TT.

Do most of you use a surge protector?

    So much for salesman's knowledge.

  • I would say it depends on where you are camping at what time of year it is. Also do you want the convenience of running the air and AC at the same time. A 30A to 50A adapter will power up both sides of your 50A rig at the same time, but you will be limited to 30A. If someone forgets and turns on to much stuff you will pop the pedestal breaker. Does the 50A site cost more? It really depends on if you like the site better and what you are willing to compromise. Remember 30AX120V=3600W and 50AX240V=12000W so quite a bite of power difference.

  • I've tried to get a lake/river 30AMP spot a few times in my Class A and found that some Campgrounds will restrict 50AMP units to 50AMP spaces .... Was VERY disappointed EACH time!!
  • My TT has 30 amp service. I run AC and microwave together often without issue.
  • We try for 50 whenever offered...BUT not needed unless we want to run both AC's at the same time...
  • Most rigs can run one AC unit and microwave. The second AC unit is on the other leg of a 50 amp shore power connection.
