Advice for first time RV rental and experience

I think the suggestion of two class C rentals is a good one. I would suggest you pick one area to concentrate on. Trying to do too much will just equal a lot of driving. This wont go over well with small children. Myself personally, I would choose the Grand Canyon area, and southern Utah. World class scenery. You could start in Las Vegas, or Phoenix. I have only done these in the winter months, but someone else might be able to suggest the best off season time to see these places. I would think after school starts in September, it would be less crowded, but the weather would still be nice. My second choice would be northern California and Yellowstone area.

Welcome to the forum! Not much privacy or separation in an RV. Sometimes there is a rear bedroom with a thin door between areas in a larger Class A RV. The front compartment would then have to accommodate one couple and the kids.

Is it doable, yes but a larger Class A will restrict where you can park it when sightseeing as I assume you will not have a rental car to drive as well. You may be better off to consider one small Class C rental RV for each couple. Easier to find parking when at sightseeing places where you need to get out to enjoy.

RVing is a wonderful experience and if you can adjust to being very close in a small place when not outside, you could have a great trip. EL Monte RV and Cruise America, as stated above, are the biggest networks of rentals.

Did not see where you intend to go nor what time of year. Weather can adversely effect travel so be sure to add that to your planning phase. Extreme heat or cold creates issues for RV travel as well as sightseeing. RV Air conditioners tend to be not so efficient in high heat areas! Summer time on the roads in America can be very busy and even getting reservations for your overnight stays may require some considerable advance planning and obtaining.

There 2 large RV rental companies in the US that may suit your needs,One is El Monte RV they have many choices in their RV rental Fleet both Class C and Class A.

There is also Cruise America they offer a smaller choice if RVs in their fleet.

First is to decide on the type of RV that will fill your needs,look at the floor plans of each type to help you decide on how to have your own space.

As stated before there is not to much privacy in a RV but if everyone gets along and can tolerate each other in cramped spaces this will make it enjoyable for all.

Do you have any familiarity with the states? The National Parks are very majestic to be sure but it's mostly all pretty scenery. The vast expanses of the US are mind boggling to those of you from Europe. 2 weeks can be burned up in seeing just Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon and any of the parks in Utah. The big question you need to ask yourself is what kind of experience do you want to have. Do you want to drive long distances to see different landscapes or do you want to have some city type of entertainment at hand like visiting museums or brew pubs or wineries? What are your interests? The children are very young and will do what you do.


What type of RV are you thinking of renting? A large Class A motorhome or a larger Class C? There is no such thing a privacy in an RV really. They are just too small for much of that. Never having driven one before do you think you can handle driving it alright? Give us some more info on what you all enjoy doing.

Recommend putting off the trip for a few years until the children are older; more like 8+ years old. At their current ages they will get nothing out of the trip and the time it takes to keep them happy will detract from your enjoyment.
