Advice for newbie

Looking for first fifth wheel--actually, first RV. Limiting choice to 3/4 ton towable (daily vehicle and do not want anything more). My wife and I will use it full time for a year or two to see the country, then on and off for half of the year thereafter--at least, that is the plan. Priorities are:
1) as trouble free as possible (routine maintenance is expected).
2) well insulated/heated/air conditioned--we will not be camping, but using the rv as our rolling hotel room--think really bad allergies, so windows closed. We will follow the seasons.
3) washer/dryer.
4) max hitch weight about 2,100 lbs--this is probably the limiting factor with our truck.
5) due to 6.5' truck bed, we plan on using a Pullrite SuperGlide hitch, if that matters.

Our options are:
a) SpaceCraft custom.
b) Arctic Fox 29-5T.
c) Used NuWa Hitchhiker II LS or Discover America--I think all Champagnes are too heavy?
d) Used Cameo.
e) Used Triple-E Topaz.

I think that Continental Coach would be too heavy. I know New Horizons is too heavy. We are looking roughly 30-34 feet, depending on weight.

Any preferences regarding these? Thanks all.
  • take a look at the Open Range Light series. They have a couple units that are set up for washer dryer. They are towable with short box with NO SLIDER and are extremely well built. They are very well insulated for 4 season use.

  • Thank for the advice--a trial or two first is in our plans.

Regarding weights--as I am new to this, I could easily be missing something. But, I thought that for our truck, hitch weight is the limiting factor. Don't I have to be within all weights to be legal, safe, and maintain warranty?

You have already spent a good amount of money on the truck.....and are about to spend another **** load on the trailer.

If you haven't yet, I STRONGLY recommend a test rental weekend or two. Doesn't have to be a 5vr to get a feel for things.

My wife's first two RV experiences about 40 years ago were her last two. She won't set foot in the one I got this spring. No hard feelings really just absolutely not interested.

If the "experience" goes sour, you will take a BIG financial hit.
If that wouldn't be a problem, then go for it.
  • You can easily handle any 5vr with a GVWR of 12,000# probably even 14K

That opens a lot more 5vr options.

That 2015 2500 has ratings close to my 2007 3500

Our HH II LS has a GVWR of 14,375#
    FTng we weighed 13,380#
  • Not really sure of year, other than "late" model Triple E Topaz FS306RL and 305RL--not sure if washer/dryer were included.
  • These are my truck's numbers--I have no idea how they came up with the max trailer weight. Also, I took off a few pounds from the hitch weight to account for the with of the hitch and a tank full of fuel.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating--fully weighted towing vehicle plus tongue weight fully loaded fifth wheel)--10,000
GAWR (Gross Allowable Weight Rating) front axle--5,200
    Curb Weight front--4,511
    Reserve Axle Capacity front--689
GAWR (Gross Allowable Weight Rating) rear axle--6,700
    Curb Weight rear--2,872
    Reserve Axle Capacity rear--3,828
GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating--fully weighted towing vehicle and fully loaded fifth wheel)--24,500
Max Trailer Weight (fully loaded fifth wheel)--16,817
    Max Tongue Load (equals GVWR-GVW)--2,617
    GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)--7,383
  • Space Craft Custom would be cool. Their site doesn't list anything about weights though.

Dry weight on the AF is 10,876.
  • 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 Duramax Crew Cab.
  • MAX Hitch weight of 2100#....that means a GVWR of 10,500# 5vr

    That limits your choices

Our HH II LS is 34' and has a wet pin of 2970#
    Forget Discovery/Champagne models

WHAT year/brand/model of truck will you use to tow with?
