You keep saying "RV lifestyle"... to me that means seasonal campers, snow birds, or full timers.
If you will be just camping weekends, you are just camping with an RV.
Camping with kids is GREAT. Definitely go to some "resort" campgrounds with planned activities, play grounds, pools, waterparks, etc. Then sprinkle in some state parks and hike and bicycle all weekend. Historic trips - don't forget places like the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock!
My first thought is to do it... buy a camper, and go camping with the grand kids. Even if it is only for a few years, they are old enough that they will remember it. You'll have a used camper you can either continue camping with or sell, whatever you want to do.
I remember years ago a group of people were talking about trips, and one adult asked a teenager about all the trips his family had taken when he was younger... the teenager said: "Yea, we stayed in a lot of hotel rooms". That is actually what the teenager remembered most!
