One other thought did come to mind as a compromise or a change of pace. A lot of campgrounds and state parks are building and renting Yurts. A camping experience, more substantial accomidations than a tent. But you would lose Air Conditioning.
You would have to do some leg work ahead of time to arrange availability but road trips could be combined as camping and a day or two hoteling.
