If you're not really on board, you'll always be miserable paying for/handling the maintenance. Like you said - it's a commitment. And, as others have said, the grand kids are going to age out pretty quickly. With the distance between you, it's not like you can take a lot of weekend trips with them. I'd opt for a rental cabin/lodge/yurt.
