Amount of test drive.

Looking to buy not sure A or C how much of a test drive should we expect from the dealer? We had a class C a few years back but a BIG difference between the Diesel pushes and the gas class A. We feel 50 or 60 miles maybe more interstates 2 lane roads some hills to really get a feel for the coach. Is that expecting too much?
THANKS
  • We usually take 30-45 minutes over a variety of roads unless something serious crops up before.(creature of habit) Having owned a previous mh, I also do a short preliminary walk around of the outside before leaving. The wife takes care of the inside details/observations.:)
  • In our area we were able to leave the dealership on city streets, drive 2 miles to x-way entrance - go on x-way about 10 miles, get off and drive on country road back into city to the dealership. We had a variety of roads and speeds. No real hills in the area to even drive to for a test drive. Some of us are from flat areas so don't even have that as a choice on a test drive.

One other thing.. IF the RV is new, not used.. Odds are the drive can be improved (I know mine was greatly improved in it's 2nd year)

If it's used. there is a chance the improvements have already been done.

    What improvements?

Some RV's rock side to side like fans at a rock concert swaying side to side in time with the music.

Sway bars stop (or seriously limit) this

Some RV's "Wag" like the tail of a dog, usually with the nose moving one way as the tail moves the other.. Track Bars or Pan Hard Bars (Same thing 2 names) stop I do not mean limit I mean STOP! this.

Steering stablizers work to help keep you on the straight and narrow.

    They work good too.

I have a Davis (roadmaster I think) trac Bart and a Blue Ox Tru Center stablizer.. The RV came with decent anti-sway bars so I did not upgrade them.
  • How many 60 mile test drives will a dealer allow on a new unit?
I know that I would be hesitant about buying the test mule!
  • When I went looking it was for a used class A. took Several for a test drive & knew they weren't for me. Took some city roads & DEFINITELY a highway. Couldn't See myself driving them full time. Bad what ever. So Don't limit yourself by the number of units you look at. You will know when you find the right one.
  • I would say that is a long test drive. I knew in about 20 miles if it was right for me. You want a mixture of local and highway driving.

My brother told me of a young man back in his (Brother's) high school days, A friend of his, took the poor salesman on a 300 mile test drive when he bought his new car.. Finally getting back to the dealership it made it all worth the salesman's while (I like the car, I want this color and these options, where do I sign)

Finally he gets the call "your car is ready" Heads in, hands over the keys on his trade in and heads home (30 miles about) with his brand new car....

About 5 miles out another driver blows a stop sign and T-Bones him.

He is sitting in the driver's seat, Trying hard to breath which is not easy under the conditions,, The other driver asks if he is OK, He indicates he is.

    But he still can't talk

The other driver finally asks what the problem is and he just points to the odometer....Which still has but a single digit on it.

The at-fault sits down and cries.

Eventually the young man recovered his breath (The problem was he was laughing so hard he could not breath) and found a farm house to call the police from.

Oh, and the dealer to request another new car.
  • I agree to a good test drive but feel 50 miles is a bit much, you,ll know in ten miles weather you like how it handles.
  • I agree with the 50/60 miles and a combination of roads.
  • That 50 or 60 miles probably means a two hour trip. I would be reluctant to go late in the day or on a weekend when the dealer's staff would be busy, but during the day on a weekday shouldn't be a problem. Don't tell the salesman just how long or how far you expect to go, but rather that you'd like to take a test drive and do it. Then be convincing to the salesman so he's not encouraging you to return to the dealership.

I've never taken a test drive that far or that long in anything I've bought. My test drives have all been in the 20 minute range, but that was enough for me.
